The Acheron River Springs

The Acheron springs from the Tomaros mountains in the Ioannina prefecture and flows west to the fishing village of Ammoudiá, where it fans out to a delta before emptying into the Ionian Sea. Many villages along the way offer access to the river, but most travelers set their itineraries to Ammoudiá, Mesopótamos, and Glykí.

Once at Gliki, follow the signs for the Acheronta Springs. When you arrive there is plenty of free parking. Here the river is wide and not too deep, so you can easily wade in. There are a number of activities on offer, you can go rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, zip lining and even take a horse ride through the shallow water.

Mesopotamos

is most closely linked to the history and mythology of the river. Located just 4 km from Ammoudia and very close to Kanalaki, the hamlet is home to what was once Lake Acherousia and was connected to the nearby village of Acherousia.

Here in Mesopotamos you will be able to see the mythological “gates of Hades” known as Necromantio.

The river Acherontas is considered one of the cleanest rivers in Greece and Epirus and not unjustly with its clear blue and transparent waters.
